Building Bridges between Europe and Asia
Since 1998 the European Union supports “Asia Urbs” as a project of decentralized cooperation for development. The project pursues two major objectives:
  • Deepening the Asian-European relations through initiating and further developing local partnerships
  • Promoting the social and economic development of the Asian partner municipalities

The approach of a “city-to-city cooperation” focuses on the promotion of local partnerships between urban and municipal governments or communities. In each project partners from the European Union and from a South- or Southeast-Asian country or China join forces together. Through technical and economic cooperation as well as capacity building the project aims at improving the following aspects of urban life and municipal planning:
  • Good urban governance and local empowerment
  • Decentralization and participation
  • Improvement of the urban infrastructure, employment and economic prosperity
  • Equality and social inclusion
  • Sustainable development and regeneration in urban areas

The ultimate goal, visible in the name of the project, is to provide means and capacity for effective, democratic and sustainable urban and municipal self-government.
